Memorial Day weekend

I know I promised some pictures from the weekend.

Other than our little panic attack with Andrew, it was a really fun weekend. Here are some pictures.

On Friday night, we made new friends, including Ms. Janine, who is a children’s entertainer and a sign language instructor. I have a funny feeling that Ms. Janine and her purple guitar will be invited to more of our parties in the future!

On Saturday, we babysat K* and the boys had a shared bath which they both seemed to enjoy! Then the clean and nice-smelling boys both met girls at the BBQ wedding that afternoon!

Sunday was the BIG BBQ at L&N’s (the lesbian party of the year – just like their 4th of July and Labor Day BBQs), where Ms. Janine brought out her purple guitar and there was also a magician and a big bouncy castle for the kids. Funny how those parties in past years were all about boozin’!!

Monday, we hung out at S&B’s with little Emma and Emma’s grandma got some great pictures of Andrew, including this one.

Not much else going on with us. Thankfully, the work week is going by quickly.

On Saturday, we head up to Niantic, Connecticut to Grandma and Grandpa’s house on the ocean!!

BTW – the Weight Watcher plan is going well. I’m down 6.4 lbs in the first 2 weeks! Only 43.6 more to go! LOL

what holiday weekend?

We had a 3-day weekend? What happened to it?

Our weekend was crazed (but fun!) and I will post pictures later – I promise.

It involved 4 BBQs (one Friday night involving king crab, two on Sunday and one on Monday), a wedding (BBQ style on Saturday), Babies R Us shopping (Monday), our first church attending experience as a family (in which Andrew slept through and K* threw up big time on the church floor and we were still invited back!) and it was all culminated into last night being on the phone at midnight with the emergency on-call pediatric nurse as we thought Andrew was suffering from liver failure.

What was that last thing, you say? Liver failure? (No worries, He’s okay!!!)

Being the mommies of the year that we are, Lois (the “oh, he’s fine” one) and Holly (the “are you sure that’s normal?” one) were arguing most of the weekend about the color of Andrew’s poop. I was convinced that it was different than normal.

My BFF (a pediatric nurse) was up from Philly for a few hours yesterday and was listening to my story about how Lois was ignoring my concerns about his gray poop.

“Was it clay colored?” she asks.

“Yeah. And really stinky.”

“That’s not good. That can be a sign of liver failure.”

What?!!?!?

We had a brief conversation about it and I was told we should keep an eye on him and maybe bring him to the doctor. Then, I moved on and only brought it up to Lois when we got home. She seemed a little perturbed that I didn’t mention it sooner and we then proceeded to completely freak each other out, which then prompted a call to our pediatrician’s office whose emergency line gives you a nurse at the children’s medical center.

“How’s his color? Is he throwing up? Has he been extra cranky? Has he had a normal bowel movement since then? Is he fatigued? Is he eating okay? Does he have a temperature?” etc.

Crankier than normal? That’s hard to tell. I replied that everything seemed fine and we were told that we didn’t need to rush him to the ER, but to call the doctor in the morning.

So THEN we proceeded to freak out even more by OVERTHINKING EVERYTHING. On Saturday, he was really throwing up a lot (heavy spit up), he slept all day on Friday, he only took 2 ounces at a time on Saturday and Sunday and he usually takes 6, it was hot on Saturday and Sunday, so maybe he had a fever and we didn’t notice!?!??!?!

OMG! How horrible are we for not knowing our kid was sick???? We went into his crib and brought him into bed with us. This lasted only a little while because we knew none of us would get any sleep, so he ended up back in his crib.

This morning, I went with Lois and Andrew to the doctor’s office because I am the one that pays attention to stuff and can answer questions.

“Andrew looks great. He has no fever. He’s had normal bowel movements since. This is totally normal. We only worry about clay poop if it’s present from day 1. etc. etc.”

As we apologized profusely about being those neurotic parents, she laughed and reminded us that she’s only seen us on his scheduled visits. True.

So, panic aside, Andrew is completely fine. He’s even been extra happy and chatty today.

As for his mommies, we might take a day or two to recover.

what a big boy!

Just doing a little showing off during tummy time. He doesn’t actually enjoy tummy time too much. After about 3-5 minutes, we’re done with it.

He likes his Bumbo, however. He can watch almost an entire inning of a Yankee game while sitting in his Bumbo before getting impatient!

Can you believe that’s supposed to go up to 18 months? He takes the whole thing up now, not even 4 months old! He looks like a little linebacker in it!

saving money

Lois is a little like her father when it comes to money. Thankfully, she’s not as obsessive as the “full time coupon king” but she’s the frugal, think-things-through one and I am the lack-of-self-control one.

She cannot understand why I find Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts coffee so much better than homemade. The most she will spend on a coffee is $1. She puts me on an allowance to try to make sure I don’t cause too much damage.

For this reason, I usually try to stay away from grocery shopping because it’s too much work. My entire life I went to a store and bought what I needed. I didn’t agonize over how many cans of tomato sauce to get this week at the store brand if I knew the ShopRite Can-Can sale was going to be on in 2 weeks, etc.

We have had more than one argument in the grocery store where Lois has said “I am totally out of coffee but my brand is 15 cents cheaper at A&P.”

I usually respond, “We are not spending $1 in gas to drive across town for you to save 15 cents on a can of coffee.”

I am not nasty about it, I just rib her a little from time to time and she gets me right back. It’s all good.

Last night, she fully admitted that her carefully thought-out formula buying scheme wasn’t really the best plan.

She was all excited to get the Gentlease formula at Babies R Us, because even though it’s a bloody fortune there, we have gift cards and she had a “Save $5 when you spend $50 on formula products” coupon.

As she was picking up the formula, she realized that the big cans were $23.99, so 2 cans were only $47.98. That’s when she decided to grab a Similac formula can than is a concentrate for $4.19.

Satisfied with herself, she paid for all of it and in the car realized how dumb it really was.

She called Salina on the way home and said “thanks for the coupon, but I just realized that I spent an extra $4.19 to save $5. What was I thinking?”

I would like to think that if I was standing in Babies R Us with her, I might have pointed this out, but she was proud of herself for saving her $5.

Riley

Dee and Shelly’s Riley had a very successful surgery. We knew she was such a little fighter!!!!

We are so happy for them and our thoughts continue to go out to them for a healthy and quick recovery!!!

Emma’s Baptism

Here’s a photo montage that Emma’s Grandma Janie did up for us from Emma’s Baptism on Sunday.

The event started out with Andrew spitting up on Emma’s dress before the ceremony (at least the dress was white), and me missing pretty much the entire thing with a very upset little boy in the hallway, bathroom, parking lot, etc.

This was the after party, where Andrew was a big hit.

Adoption 101

We met with our lawyer today, who we both love love love.  She’s probably the TOP gay rights lawyer in the state, at least we think she is.

And while an adoption is not really necessary (we are both on the birth certificate), it is a very good idea.

She gave us forms and an hour educational seminar on the current status of the co-parent adoption laws, etc. and we basically agreed that instead of paying her to do the work, I could do it myself after my little course from her.

The problem is that our town probate judge insists that we need a home study since this is a co-parent adoption.

But, we are going to try to waive the home study since:

a- it’s costly

b – it takes forever to have done

c – it’s unnecessary since Lois and I were a married couple under the laws of our state before she even conceived

So, I am going to start preparing the documentation to apply for a step-parent adoption and state our case for waiving the home study. I can also attach exibits regarding our life and commitment to each other. To Lois’ embarassment, one exhibit will be the front page newspaper article on us from our civil union day!

As for whether or not we will effectuate a name change for little Andrew Michael at the same time, the jury is still out.

She’s Here!

Congrats to Dee and Shelly!
