on a roll
July 14, 2007 at 1:37 pm (new discoveries, what bad mommies we are)
How silly of me to think my child wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Lois was driving family to JFK airport this morning, and I had the chunk-a-munk all to myself. I left him in the middle of the bed scrunched into a pillow and ran downstairs to get the stroller out of Lois’ car. No sooner had I stepped back into the house from the garage (90 seconds maybe) and I heard Andrew screaming bloody murder. I raced upstairs to find him on his belly less than 12 inches from the edge of the bed. WTF?!?!?
OMG! I mean, we know he wiggles and we strap him into everything we can and don’t leave him unattended at all, but how did he do that?
Of course, Momma Loey leaves Mommy Holly home alone for 2 minutes and I am inches close to the kid falling off the bed and onto his head. Nice.
Ivelisse watched him yesterday afternoon and she said he spent most of the time trying very hard to roll over. So, as I went about cleaning this morning, I put him on the floor and let him go at it, with some encouragement from me as well.
Starting on his back, he arches his back and gets himself about 90% over onto his belly, but he can’t get that arm out of the way and rolls back to his starting position.
We worked on this on the floor for about 15 minutes. Finally, I opened the attic stairs (to get all the 6-9 clothes because he’s bustin’ out of his 3-6s) and am up in the attic for about 90 seconds.
As I come down the attic stairs and look to my left, I see a little boy 100% on his belly, arms totally in front of him. He looks up at me, totally stunned that he did it, then he smiled.
Dammit it was cute.
Dammit I didn’t have a camera anywhere close to me.
Dammit I missed the actual rollover. (But I was home for it!)
Dammit the kid is mobile.
answered prayers

A few weeks ago, I asked for prayers for D&Y’s baby girl. She was born at 29 weeks when Y’s blood pressure jumped too high and has been in NICU since.
Mia turned 1 month old on Wednesday and has been doing very well. She’s been a trooper and endured a blood infection and 2 spinal taps.
Her birth weight was 2 lbs 9 oz and she is now 3 lbs 9 ozs, her episodes of sleep apnea are diminishing, she’s been eating very well and she just started nursing! The progress has been wonderful and we are hopeful that she might even be able to go home in about 2 weeks.
Thank you so much to everyone who responded with kind thoughts and prayers! We are very excited for Mia to be home with her anxious siblings and mommies!

pictures of myself
July 12, 2007 at 2:58 pm (fabulous photography, technology)
Today is website photo day at work. Ugh.
I just had mine taken and was impressed with the ability of the photographer to do some quick “fixes” on his program to get rid of some “lines” and some stray hairs and other things. (Like flab, there’s a lot of excess flab.)
I hate getting my picture taken normally. I don’t think I’m very photogenic or maybe I’m under the mistaken belief that I’m much cuter in real life.
But I really hate pictures of myself right now, when I’m at my fat stage. Honestly, having pictures taken of me with Andrew is one of my motivations to get my butt into Weight Watchers. So, I’ve lost a little weight, but I still have a considerable way to go before I am my cute thin self again.
Boy, how I wish that photographer/digital editor guy could follow me around and edit every picture I take of myself. How great would that be?
the FIRST name game
July 11, 2007 at 4:12 pm (names, vacation)
This is a post about Andrew’s name that is not about his last name. Can you believe it?
When we decided on the name Andrew, we were both leaning towards calling him Drew above anything else.
My 3 yr old nephew loved calling him Baby Andy, which is cute, but I’m not really into the Andy thing.
For some reason, we stuck with calling him Andrew until he started fitting into a Drew. Now, I kinda like Andrew and think he looks like and Andrew.
My mother, who rarely puts her 2 cents in, has made a few subtle comments here and there about him not being an Andrew and we should call him Drew.
What’s up with these moms getting into the name business??
I really like “Drew” but I’m just not feeling it yet with him. Even though that’s why we named him what we did. Weird?!? Right?
I think we’re sticking with Andrew until it seems to us not to fit him anymore.

On another front, I’m starting some countdowns. The next 10 days at work will be brutal with the boss lawyer and the secretary on vacation at the same time.
10 days until this. We will spend 2 days at my parent’s house with Suz and K*. On that Saturday, we can watch the fireworks from their porch!
11 days until my 31st birthday!**
15 days until we leave for P-Town (Family Pride’s Family Week!)

I don’t particularly care to make a big issue out of my birthday. Mostly because of a tragedy that occurred on my 23rd birthday that just is revisited every year. Maybe someday I’ll talk about it on my blog. Maybe.
wait a minute…

Andrew doesn’t roll over. At all. He seems to have very little interest in it.
Yes, I know how many babies out there are sitting up or rolling over or whatever. He’s perfectly content being immobile right now.
This morning, I was in the bathroom and he was 1/2 propped up on Lois, she yelled to me and when I came into the room, he was on his belly smiling up at me.
“OMG! He rolled???” I asked.
“Well, he cheated a little. He kinda rolled downhill.”
We spent the next 10 minutes trying to get him to do it again. Calling to him, moving toys just outside his reach. Nothing.
I’m convinced that I’ll miss it when he does it for real for the first time, but I can get over that.
About 30 minutes later on my drive to work, it hit me. Why the hell are we so anxious to get this kid to roll over? That would mean he would be mobile. A mobile child is a high maintenance child.
the party life
July 9, 2007 at 2:37 pm (parties, weekends)
Just who do we think we are? Party hopping? Goofing off?? Being irresponsible mommies!!?!?
Friday night, I was left in charge of the boy. Lois had a date. (LOL) Okay, she hung out with some old *former* work friends. Instead of being a responsible mommy and staying at home, I ran to P-Fed’s house for a “quick” BBQ. Many of my buddies were there and Andrew was a saint. He fell asleep on Sue and she wouldn’t give him back. After A-Rod hit a 3 run homerun, we got a little rowdy and Andrew woke up. He woke up very unhappy. As I tried to calm him down enough to get him into the car seat and home (I couldn’t take him into the house because K* was asleep in the living room), we heard someone yelling. A neighbor was yelling at us to shut the baby up.
Are you f*ing kidding me?!?!? I told our friends that we should let the neighbor call the cops. First of all, the dispacher would be like “you want us to go over there because a baby is crying?” Secondly, it’s a tiny town and Lois’ brother was one of 2 cops on duty that night. Sure, call the cops, Andrew hasn’t seen his uncle for a few days!
Of course, everyone there found it incredible funny and uncalled for so I have a feeling this neighbor might never get a good night sleep again. LOL. In all of the years of big Irish family BBQs in their backyard with kegs and bonfires, no one got yelled at before. It was a 5-month old – MY 5-month old – who sent this neighbor over the edge.
Saturday, we BBQ hopped. And at the second BBQ, we got talked into going out to a bar for the night. We made the phone call to Lois’ mother and all of a sudden we were childless for the night! WAHOO!
After getting to the Hatch (THE MOST happening bar on the lake in the entire area) at 9 pm, we quickly realized that this is a 23-year old hetero single person haven. Not exactly our first choice of atmosphere. The people watching was incredibly entertaining, and sad sometimes. What 20-something women do to get a guy to talk to them. ugh. Lois and I remarked about how lucky we are to not be single again (remember that honey!) However, since we were safe ride for Suz (Lois was driving not me, I needed a safe ride myself), we had to stick it out and ending up hearing “LAST CALL” shout out at one point. I was confused. I don’t think I’ve heard that since college.
Needless to say, I was so “free” without a child that I got up on Sunday morning and played 18 holes of golf and Lois went to this place for a few hours. Lois showed up after our round with Andrew and we had a free lunch courtesy of my mom.
Andrew slept for 9 hours straight at Mema and Pop-Pop’s house on Saturday night, so Mema (Lois’ mother) has already mentioned that she will take him again for an overnight. While we are paying very close attention to how much leeway we give Mema with Andrew, we are thinking that a few nights here and there is much better than everyday.
What partiers we are, right? This weekend was almost a B.A. (Before Andrew) weekend! And, holy shit, are we exhausted.

Here’s a quick picture of the boy on the 4th! I will post more pictures later of our festivities.

Lois and I had an argument last night about “saves” in major league baseball.
I was right, of course. LOL.
I told her that since Billy Wagner was entered the Mets game in the 8th inning and the Mets had a 4 run lead instead of a 3 run lead, that it was not a save situation. We bickered back and forth about it, then resorted to the internet for an answer.
Then, she says “well, that’s a new rule.”
I think it’s an old rule.
Any experts out there want to help us settle this one??
3 strike rule
July 6, 2007 at 1:52 pm (Uncategorized)
We have 2 Dunkin’ Donuts at the bottom of our hill. One is a drive thru and one is a non-drive-thru-get-your-lazy-ass-out-of-your-car Dunkin’ Donuts.
I obviously like going to the drive thru one because (1) I am a lazy ass and (2) it’s a quick right turn where the other one is a left turn across 2 lanes of traffic.
However, the drive thru DD is horrible.
Remember, this story? Yep, it’s the same DD.
Well, they are incredibly slow and seem to go through employees awfully quick. I also get frustrated when I watch people across the street park, get out of their cars, go inside, get their coffee and beat me back to the road. Yet, I keep going because of reasons 1 and 2 above.
This week, however, my patience might be shot.
As I have said before, I spent many years working in customer service (retail, waiting tables, bartending, etc.) and I do understand how frustrating it is to deal with the general public, but I also might have a shorter fuse when people suck at customer service. (I am not one of those people who yells at people, I just huff away to myself).
I digress.
I am a frou-frou coffee drinker. I don’t drink coffee every day, but when I get it, I am very particular. I love my Vanilla Chais or other flavored items. Now that I’m on Weight Watchers (which this week was a bad week, thanks for asking), I stay away from the Vanilla Chai, but have my new little treat.
I like a large Toasted Almond iced coffee with extra skim and 2 splendas. It’s at most a 2 point treat. I even bought myself one of these because I take my iced coffee so seriously. Plus, I love my gadgets and toys.
I went to the drive thru DD 3 times this week.
Tuesday morning I ordered my large Toasted Almond iced coffee with extra skim and 2 splendas. What I received was a large Toasted Almond iced coffee with extra toasted almond syrup. Ugh. I didn’t realize it until I was halfway to work, then I threw it out.
Thursday morning I ordered my large Toasted Almond iced coffee with extra skim and 2 splendas. Once I ordered, I was asked “extra light?”, I replied “extra skim.” When I got it at the window, it was announced again that I had a large Toasted Almond iced coffee, extra light and 2 splendas. I repeated that I wanted extra skim and she nodded at me. Halfway to work, I tasted my coffee. Ugh. They put half and half or something instead of skim milk. It felt like I was drinking butter. Double ugh.
Friday morning, I tried my luck again. I ordered my large Toasted Almond iced coffee with extra skim and 2 splendas. I pulled out and tasted it at the next stop light. Ugh. What the?!?! It was heavy on the toasted almond syrup, too light on the skim milk and I’m pretty sure there was not enough, if any, splenda.
Am I that difficult and picky!?!? Why is it that the inconvenient DD knows how to make a coffee??
I think I am initiating the 3 strike rule and am going to force myself to boycott this Dunkin Donuts. Let see how long this lasts.
