He’s been a little cranky and needy lately. I thought it was the cold.
Now, he kid won’t take a bottle. He’s averaged 1-2 bottles a day for the past 3 days. He flips out when we try to give it to him.
I got him to take 1/2 a bottle tonight and it was only because he was too tired to fight me on it.
He will, however, try to grab my Chinese food and freak out when I won’t give him any.
I’m not sure if it’s his cold, if he’s teething or if he’s just wanting to be a big boy. He wants big people food and we have been able to get some fluids in him by getting him to drink out of a glass, which he loves.
Here’s a quick pic of the boy from a few days ago. He was showing off his new shoes that we found in his closet. This was the few moments of time he was distracted enough not to keep trying to take them off.
***UPDATE
Lois told me that she’s gotten him to take 8 ounces this morning already, so we’re hopeful that he will keep taking the bottle today. We’ll see.

Oh no! So sorry to hear he’s ready for the chopsticks, but maybe soon enough he can use that energy to make you all dinner!? Wait, child labor laws, right? hehe… btw – adorable pic!

cute shoes!
ps. if he’s teething, the action of sucking might irritate the pain already going on. my friend’s pediatrician told her to give breastmilk or formula in a cup and let him drink it. like a small cup, not a sippy (since they invoke the same sucking action to get it out).

I thought it might be teething or an ear infection that made him hurt when he tried to suck the bottle.
But he doesn’t even want to try and take the bottle at all. Now that he’s figured out that he can turn his head away and bat the bottle away, it’s much fun. And when he doesn’t want something, he gets pissed if you keep trying to give it to him.
We’re just trying to get fluids into him. He usually has 3 meals of food a day and 4-5 bottles (5 ounces each). Like I said, we’ve been lucky to get 1-2 bottles (not even 3 ounces each) the past 2 days.
He usually wakes up with a full diaper and this morning it was totally dry. Lois said she’s going to keep trying to get fluids into him today, but we’re starting to get worried.

I can see why you’d be a bit concerned. That picture, though: wow! he’s a happy and gorgeous boy!!

We had the same problem, and actually still have issues with Cooper drinking enough fluids. At Cooper’s 12 month appt. I brought it up to our doctor and she said she wasn’t concerned. I was nursing him, but knew he wasn’t getting a lot(I, unfortunately, was not a milk machine) and he would refuse bottles/sippy cups. She said as long as he’s still wetting diapers, and they don’t look super concentrated not to worry. (Another sign of dehydration is a dry tongue–always want to see a wet tongue.) Especially because he was eating really well, she said he just might be getting enough liquids through his foods–and he is a pretty big eater. I wasn’t totally satisfied with the answer, but he really is doing well.
Maybe you could try giving him tylenol or motrin and after that kicks in offer him a bottle. That might tell you if it’s teething pain or if he’s just not interested???
I would always try to mix (this is after he was 1) whole milk into a lot of his foods too.
I know it is nerve-wracking. I still worry about it!
My 2 cents.

If he’s not wetting diapers, especially after a nights sleep, I would take him to the doctor to get checked out. It’s better to have a sane and safe mind then keep worrying!!!

We have the opposite problem–getting Riley to actually enjoy some solids everyday. Hopefully it’s nothing and just that he loves his food. He seems to enjoy solids a lot so perhaps he does want to try more and more food. I know with Shannon & Kim (other motherhood) Erik no longer likes his purees everyday. He wants the big stuff.
What a cutie. Love the shoes. I rarely put shoes on Riley because she just takes them off and eats them.

The kid is telling you…mom, I’m ready to eat now. Stop with the formula.
Syd did the same thing.
Feed him already

Holly and Lois,
He is absolutely adorable! About this “no bottle” strike he’s on, have you tried giving him a bottle when he’s occupied with something else, a book or toy…just kind of slip it into his mouth w/out picking him up and engaging much with him. Sounds weird but sometimes if Sophie is playing the “bat the bottle away” game (and it IS a purposeful game, I believe, to explore his autonomy and individuality/control) she will start sucking away without even realizing it if we absolutely make no fuss about it. My other suggestion is to give him more finger foods if he seems ready for it, as others have said. Moistened Cheerios (the dry ones stick in Sophie’s throat) and those tiny little green peas are good starters. Also soft rice keeps Sophie busy. Maybe he’ll take a bottle more readily if he gets to eat more independently at other times. Final thought: make sure he gets water too from time to time, not just formula. Sometimes S. will accept water when she’s fussy. Good luck and let us know what works!

Isaac fed himself breakfast this morning – all finger foods (Cheerios, bananas, strawberries, and cheese). He loves to feed himself and gets really pissed off sometimes when a spoonful of mush comes his way. He’s totally off baby food now. I sometimes pick up the low sodium chicken rice soups and mix some with a little rice cereal to thicken it up and he’ll take that from a spoon. We went out to Ruby Tuesday’s together yesterday and I gave him a couple bits of broccoli and some avocado, but he was more interested in a bottle and a nap so protested loudly. I’m finding that when he profusely shakes his head and screeches he’s had enough to eat. I’ve noticed that his appetite isn’t as big now as it was when he first started eating baby food. He used to be able to down a whole banana mushed up with applesauce and rice cereal for breakfast!
It’s probably best to check with your pediatrician if you’re concerned about him not getting enough fluids.

I don’t blame you for being worried, I’d be worried about that too. It could very well be teething. Does he let you touch his gums with your finger or does it bother him? It could be that the sucking action or the bottle nipple are irritating his sore gums. I’d take him to the doctor if he wakes up with a dry diaper again, though. You could maybe try giving him formula in a cup or mix some into his food and see if you can get some into him that way. Glad to hear he drank 8 ounces this morning. Let us know how the rest of the day and night go.
