totally out of touch

This is a conversation I had recently with a co-worker. Remember the young guy?

He is 27 years old. He currently lives at home, is single, has no children to support (and probably no student loans either)

YG: Remember the client I met the other day? We talked cars. He even let me sit in his P*rsche.

Me: You did mention him, yes.

YG: well, he sent me an ad clipping for a 2003 P*rsche C*rrera for only $60k. I really want it.

Me: If you trade in your Audi A6 superdooper ride, you could definitely swing it.

YG: I can’t trade that in, I can’t drive the P*rsche all the time, it would be my weekend car.

Me: Oh. A weekend car. Okay.

YG: The only way I could swing it was to probably cash in some of my stuff.

Me: Stuff? What is stuff?

YG: You know, you have stuff.

Me: I’m not quite sure what stuff you are talking about? A 401K plan? I do have one of those. It probably has enough money in it for a 1992 Suz*ki S*murai, not a P*rsche.

YG: No, stuff. Like money that your parents set aside for you to use as a down payment on a house, or your wedding or for the start of your kids’ college fund, something like that.

Me: You think my parents put money aside for me for when I grew up?

YG: Yes, they had to of.

Me: You think parents do that?

YG: Yes. (totally perplexed that I am not on the same page as him)

Me: My parents have no such thing for me. I’m sure they would have told me about it.

YG: It’s for help with life stuff, you know. Probably not for buying a P*rsche as a second car. I’m sure they did.

Me: Hmmm. I can’t imagine why they didn’t bring this up to me when I was trying to buy a house.

YG: Anyway, see ya later.

Me: Yeah. I’m calling my mother right now.

What weird reality am I living in?

- – -

I called my mother and asked her where my trust fund money was.

I think she’s still laughing.

From one kid who didn’t get 5 dollars to another :) I’M STILL LAUGHING !!
That is JUST great. I too know people like this. People who have it made, who’s parents have money and so they will have money. I hate them. well in a jealous..why does it always work out for you people….kind of way.
What makes me mad is my parents paid for both of my brothers to get married. I didn’t get SHIT !
I’m calling my mom too…I think we could both use a good laugh.
    Thanks !

Wow – talk about a feeling of entitlement. He is in for a shocker when life kicks him in the rear. :)

I don’t know many people who had money given to them when they grew up. Though my parents did start accounts for my niece and nephews to help with education or buying a house I’m sure there wasn’t enough in them to buy a car. :)

The funny thing is – they did that for their grandchildren but never for their kids. And not only that but their wills left/leave everything to charity so even after my dad is gone, no dollars are coming this way.

    :)

This is hysterical. Repulsive, but still hilarious. Wow – it blows my mind that there are people out there who just don’t even question the advantages they’ve had …

    And the rich get richer….
I met lots of people like this at university (I went to a posh university) and it was the sense of righteous entitlement that floored me almost more than the money itself.

I can think of only one wealthy friend whose parents/family took a (to my mind) healthier approach. The extended family had a trust fund managed by several family members. Anyone needing a hand for something had to write and apply to the trust outlining what the money was for and how they proposed to pay it back for the next generation. Interest free of course, and undoubtedly sometimes it was not returned, but nevertheless they had to APPLY for it, not just sweet-talk mummy!

The conversation got better later. He wondered if he could afford to do both and asked me how to figure out how much it would cost him a month.
When I asked him how much he pays right now for his Audi, including financing plus insurance, he said he didn’t know.
I asked how he couldn’t know how much his car cost him per month, he said “I have people who take care of that for me.”
I was perplexed, then he said that his mother works for some type of finance business or something and so his family utilitizes it to pay their bills.
How could you not know how much you are paying for something?!!?!

And here I am wondering if I should pick up my suits from the dry cleaning this week or order more contact lenses. Can’t do both if I am going to need 3 more gas fillups before the next paycheck.

    WTF!?!?!?

Jesus! “i’ve got people who do that”. Who really says that kind of shit (in the 25-45 set)? I’m with you girl..I’m trying to figure out which bills we will have to juggle to have Christmas, AND an IVF this month. I’m not even going to call my mom..she recently had surgery..I wouldn’t want her to bust anything while laughing.

He reminds me of some folks I went to grad school with. Smart enough to earn a scholarship that paid a (small) stipend but then mom & dad paid all of their rent and gave unlimited access to the credit card. They had a lot more fun than I did! My stipend went toward rent, and my wife was picking up all of my slack!!!

I think my 403B has enough for a bicycle.

I’m calling my parents now. They’re probably spending all of my money on their food and meds and stuff. Greedy, huh?

The only “stuff” my parents set aside for me was all the crap I left behind when I moved out!

Wowza!!! And ya know… the *really* scary thing is that it doesn’t sound like he “got it”. What a punk!

I wish I had “stuff”. But wait, no – maybe I don’t. They’d be holding it over my head till the day they die. I’ll take my independance, thanks. Carie’s parents though… it would be awesome if they made her student loans vanish! :)

Very funny. I have to admit I got help with college but certainly not a house or second car! Sheesh!

That’s so funny. There’s no money for me either. I had to steal lunch money from my mom, so there’s no way she has money put away!

Oh boy your post gave me a good laugh. I remember my college years and those who would arrive on campus in their nice shiny beamers & matching luggage. I didn’t even have a damn bus pass! My parents have more money than they need, but believe that to appreciate a dollar you have to know how to earn one – through blood, sweat and tears. Maybe we should start a reality boot camp and he can be our first victim?

  21. November 16, 2007 at 12:37 am

Our 20s….boy was that a time of unrealistic dreams, abuse right and left and ZERO idea of reality. Well, on top of college, we should call “post college” education. Perhaps we should add a few more years to college & teach people how to become “realistic”. ;)

My kids had SO better not be hoping for that. I have to pay my own student loans! LOL!
