I gave up for now with the video camera. I’m back to the video from my regular digital camera. That’s why the quality is a little touch and go.

I’m posting a quick one to keep our pregnant Norwegian occupied! Hope is works!

Look who is walking!
Well, with help.

Check out these silly boys!

On another note, as we are planning on taking the tree down hopefully in the next few days, I am also thinking of “purging” some toys like Stacey and Angele were doing.

What amazes me is that with all of the shit wonderful toys we have so graciously received from friends, the 2 toys that seem to be Andrew’s absolute favorite are these:

Why do we need all the other noisy stuff that has taken over our living space??

They did it!

16-0!

Too bad these fans couldn’t hang late enough to see the whole thing!

Now, the Pats just have to win it all. No pressure.

Holy Sh*t, Hann*h Montana!!

Let me start out by saying that I am not a big believer in getting kids the greatest thing out there, spending too much money on the “it” thing. And, trust me, the girls are not lacking. Their mom got them cell phones, a Wii and Guitar Hero for Christmas. And they’re only 11.

But, if we can make something happen without going overboard, that’s okay, right?!?!

In some weird incredible stroke of luck, we got tickets to see the show of the milennium!

We left to pick up K. and S. (the twins) and nothing fell into place in the way of timing. S has some anxiety issues (more on that at another time) and probably made a wise decision not to go. So, on our way to drop off the boy at Uncle Joey’s house, we mentioned to Aunt Dawn that is Riss wanted to go (their 13 yr old daughter, Lois’ niece). But she was 15 minutes north on the mountain snowboarding. Apparently, after she shrieked bloody murder, she raced down the mountain, jumped into her brother’s car and they met us in a deli parking lot 10 minutes later.

The traffic was absolutely horrendous. Every roadway we hit was worse than the previous. Whomever thought driving from CT to Long Island on Friday before New Years’ at rush hour wasn’t very smart. But we were on an adventure.

We told Riss and K over and over again that there was a very real possibility that we would not end up with tickets. The night before, will call had released several floor tickets an hour before the show and we were hoping and praying that it would happen for us.

We got there barely 15 minutes before the show started and the people at will call thought we were crazy to think any more tickets would have been released.

The girls were so excited now, we were starting to feel horrible. Scalpers were selling seats for $150-$250 a piece. We had less than $300 on us and we weren’t letting them go in by themselves.

Let me stop here and just say that Lois has this way about her. She attracts people. She doesn’t know why, but I do. She’s really cute, very innocent looking and is incredibly sweet and friendly the second you make eye contact with her.

She ended up talking to a mom who was trying to sell her one remaining ticket. A scary middle aged man was offering her money for it, but she offered it to Lois for free.

Lois almost didn’t take it, because it was only one ticket and it wasn’t going to solve our problem.

“Just take it,” the woman said. “Maybe it will be good karma. If you can get tickets for the kids, then you can get in too!”

We still started to feel deflated. Then, moments before the show started, a woman walked right up to us and asked if we needed tickets. She had 2 tickets on her and her daughters were already sitting in the other 2 seats. They all saw the show the night before and she had no desire to see it again. She sold them to us for FACE VALUE = $68 a piece and Riss and K almost had a collective stroke. (So we got 3 HM tickets for $136)

I was not about to shell out $50+ dollars to try and find one more ticket for myself, so I told them to get in there and I would occupy myself with something.

Well, they TOTALLY scored! The seats were in the first tier, first row! All the way home, they were jabbering about how it was the best concert ever! How they could “see the expressions on their faces”, Jonas Bros this, Miley that. OMG! They were in absolute heaven.

Lois is my witness that both promised that we don’t need to buy them a Christmas or birthday present for many, many years. Yeah, right.

As for me, I TOTALLY scored too.

When I asked a nice security guard if there were any bathrooms accessible to the outside, he said “oh, if you don’t have a ticket, you can hang in the parents’ area.”

Parents’ area?

“oh yeah. There’s a table section to hang out and there’s also a restaurant/bar too!”

Did he say bar? I perked right up.

The parents’ area was screaming my name. I parked myself in front of a huge flat screen TV set on ESPN and watched college football while living up to my weight watchers break by eating nachos and a burger (which I shared both with Lois).

Lois spent her time between hanging out with me and checking on them. It was perfect.

Well, almost perfect.

As we were splitting the not-so-good burger, I reminded Lois that Long Island had several White Castles. It was her turn to perk up.

We got out of the parking lot in a cinch because I dropped them off when we arrived and I parked the car, facing out, 8 spots from the exit. Good thinking on my part. We would have been there forEVER.

After a couple misguided attempts at using the GPS system to find a WC, we called Aunt Dawn and bribed her with some burgers if she got on the internet to find an address.

Why I felt that Fordham Ave in the Bronx was a better idea than Yonkers, I will never know. There was no drive-thru, so I had to leave them in the car while I ran in. It was definitely not my brightest move, but I stood in the WC with my best I-am-a-big-dyke-and-I-lived-in-Camden-so-don’t-mess-with-me look and we all got through it.

K had never had WC before and announced to us that they were the best burgers ever and it was the best night ever.

So, we had K home at 12:01 am, we were home with the boy and in bed by 1:45 am and Suz showed up with our charge for the day (K*den) at 8 am. But it was all worth it.

My willingness to go along with the plan and my aggressive NYer style driving down there has earned me many points with Lois. I may have a few “out of the doghouse” cards for at least a day or so.

A perfect night.

Man, am I exhausted.

It worked out. Maybe we do have great karma. We were so happy for them that it all fell into place.

However, my advice to others is definitely to not try this at home. At least make sure you have tickets when you drive 2+ hours with two tweens in the car!

an adventure

I love my wife.

I love her girls.

That’s why I’m agreeing to this spontaneous adventure.

I’m leaving work shortly to embark on a gamble. A gamble that Lois’ concert ticket expertise will pan out into the perfect Christmas present for the girls.

Tickets for this.

Tonight.

1.5 hours away.

We gave up crappy seats to pray for good ones. At the face value. $65 a piece.

Wish us luck.

I’m at work today. Can you tell? 2 posts in one day?!?!

Yesterday, I reported to Ms. Maureen (Nurse J’s mom and a day care provider for infants for countless years) that Sir Andrew had bumps (little lumps) on his head that we noticed Christmas day. One behind each ear and one on his neck, just below his skull.

She replied that she had seen children with them and they were most likely swollen lymph nodes and were harmless.

Lois and I decided to keep an eye on them for a few days.

Today, my MIL has the boy and she called frantic that he has cysts of some kind on his head. We told her they were most likely swollen lymph nodes and were probably totally harmless. “Well, did you call Nurse J” she asked, ready to bring him to the ER.

So, I called Nurse J (my best friend who is a pediatric nurse and who has the utmost patience for our frantic phone calls since we don’t want to look like totally neurotic parents to our doctor because Lois thinks our doctor is hot) I did not reach Nurse J just left a voicemail at 2:30 pm this afternoon.

Apparently, my MIL has called Lois 2 times since then. He’s yanking at his ears and the bumps are still there. Not surprising since he yanks at his ears every other day and the countless times we’ve brought him to the doctor, he’s never had an ear infection. And I’m also not surprised the bumps are still there. I can’t imagine they would have magically disappeared so quick.

To appease her and not make a lame phone call to cute doctor’s office, I went to WebMD, diagnosed the situation as swollen lymph nodes and then googled the term.

Probably a sore throat or a cold. His nose did start running again yesterday.

But it could be strep throat.

Could be lyme’s disease or mono.

Or leukemia or cancer or HIV I don’t want to think about it

um.

Panic.

Damn this online diagnosing thing.

As I bring myself back to reality, every site I have seen appears to not insist on requiring medical attention until other symptoms show up including prolonged fever, redness, rapid growth or if they are there for more than 2 weeks.

He was whiney and needy last night. I figured that and the runny nose were associated with the teeth coming in. Poor kid probably really isn’t feeling well.

Note to self, be patient and talk to Nurse J before doing too much web doctor exploring. sheesh.

I told myself I wouldn’t be a neurotic parent. Yeah right.

- – -

UPDATE: I spoke with Nurse J and she of course said they were swollen lymph nodes. She said the locations meant he was most likely fighting off an infection in his head.

Does he have a scratch on his head?

Yes, a new scratch on his forehead.

That wouldn’t be it. What about his scalp?

ding. ding. ding. He’s had horrible cradle cap recently with some really bad spots.

She made me feel much better, but told me to keep an eye out. We are taking care of the cradle cap with baby oil, a hard comb and some Head n Shoulders (which Nurse J told me to use 2 times a week, not everyday. oops)

Good thing my bestest friend in the world has the patience of a saint. And was trained at CHoP.

recovering from the holidays

Wow! So far so good with the “a post a day” thing, right!?!?

So, I spent the day home from work yesterday, which was needed. It’s a lot of work. He’s definitely “very busy” and getting a shower in was just about the only thing I did accomplish all day.

The only other thing I did was watch a documentary on the Discovery channel that was about this place. I am totally hooked. I just sent my brother an email and told him I think we should save up to do this together the winter between our 40th birthdays! (If Lois lets me!)

I was looking through my camera and have almost no pictures from Christmas. I know, I know. WTF?!?! I hope everyone else took pictures (Suz?). I was very busy trying to take video.  Which I still can’t get on the computer.  I am beyond frustrated now.***

I do have one or two pictures from the holiday chaos. Here’s one of the boy post-opening presents with Momma sitting on my parents’ couch. (Clarification = he didn’t open them, we did. He did eat some paper, though) Check out the new Robeez – baseball ones!

***Here’s the scoop. Lois bought me this for Christmas since the guy at B*st Buy told her it was exactly what I needed. My brother looked at the contraption on Christmas and said that I could use that unless I wanted to get a different cord and firewall card (?) which would provide better quality. So, I bring the thing home, install the software, plug it into the USB port, connect the composite cables (white, red and yellow) in the thing, AV end into the camera, plug in the camera, put it on VCR/Playback and hit “play”, then hit “capture” in the program. Nothing. Nothing I have tried in the past 3 days (or the past 6 months) has enabled me to get video from the many camcorder tapes I have to the computer. What am I doing wrong??? I am thinking of returning the Dazzle thing and putting it towards a cheap digital video camcorder, but I don’t want to have to spend any more money. sigh. Anyone with ideas, please feel free to share them.

Happy Holidays!!

I hope everyone had/is having a wonderful holiday season!

We celebrate Christm*s here and had a great last 2 days, but we’re a little tired today. I’m home with the boy today since his Mema is sick with a stomach virus. I figure I have 9 vacation days left and I’m going to lose them anyway (plus I’m not making my annual hours) so why not stay home with the kid!

It’s 12:01 pm and the only thing I’ve accomplished yet today is a shower! Now that he’s taking a nap, I can actually write a little.

First and foremost, I must apologize to a very bored and a very pregnant Norwegian who I promised I would write a blog post last night. I was too exhausted by the time I got home to even write my own name. So, from now until at least the birth of the little baby boy she is waiting for, I vow to post everyday to give her something to read – even if it’s incredibly boring!!

Christmas was wonderful! This was the first year that we weren’t driving between 3-4 different houses all day. We did Christmas Eve with Lois’ parents (including a nice meal of king crab legs and filet mignon) and left by 5 pm to be at my parents’ by 7 pm where we had another fab dinner which included swedish meatballs.

We stayed at my parents’ house for the night and had a nice lazy Christmas morning with my sister, BIL, 13 yo nephew and my brother.  My sister was totally bearable (not always the case) and my brother seemed to be doing fine, even though he was not with his family. I don’t know how to describe it other than it was nice. It was not stressful at all.

Andrew was totally overwhelmed and spent most of the day bouncing back and forth between being terrified of the dog (Sam, the Akita) or being comfortable enough with the dog to want to bang her in the head with a toy.

Andrew got 3, yes 3, ride/walk-behind toys and on Christmas day, he actually used one to walk around with a little. We are very hopeful that he finds this much more fun than wanting us to constantly walk around with him.

As I try now to go check out all my buddies’ blogs to see how everyone is doing, I will also work on getting video up since Lois got me something for Christmas that may solve my whole analog tape to DV problem. We’ll see if I can actually figure it all out.

Hope everyone’s holiday was happy and full of peace!

just playin’ around

Sorry for the radio silence.

Same shit different day around here.

Started Christmas shopping tonight. Just got home. ugh.

Our condo has not sold yet – the open house was canceled due to weather on Sunday. I guess we’ll pick back up on that after the new year. Hopefully we can have a few days where we aren’t frantic to make sure the house is perfect.

I had my yearly review at work for my first year there. No surprises. They’ll keep me around but there’s always room for improvement, right!?! I was actually very positive considering that the “most difficult to please boss in the office” seems okay with me. That’s pretty big, I guess.
Andrew’s been sick for about 2 weeks. He was put on a nebulizer last week and seems to have gotten rid of the chest thing. But now, it seems like the teeth are coming in busloads. We might be close to 7 teeth right now. Not sure.

Daycare told us our kid is needy. Sheesh.

Andrew is winning the sleep/crib wars, mostly because he’s been sick. We just can’t make him cry it out when he’s sick. He’ll sleep through the night no problem in our bed. And we sleep too. Well, as well as two mommies can sleep in a queen bed with a 23 lb boy who keeps wanting to be sideways.

Hope everyone’s holidays are going well. We’ve been going non-stop and can’t wait for a day of family time.

And here’s some quick video of a playful boy.

fighting sleep

This video was taken on Saturday night after about 4-5 attempts of him almost falling asleep on us, but waking right up and screaming when we tried to get him into the crib, and after dragging him out to Kohl’s for a car trip since he wouldn’t sleep. I love the looks we got from people for having him out after 9:30 pm. One woman actually asked “what’s he doing out so late?”

It’s a little long and I wish it wasn’t so dark, but he was totally cracking up.

Last night, he fell asleep at 7:03 pm not even 1/2 way into his bottle. As soon as I tried to get him into the crib, total chaos ensued.

After some attempts to let him cry it out. Then pick him up to console him a little. Then let him cry it out. Then try to pick him up again. Then lay him down in the crib. He stands up again. Put him down in the crib again. He stands up again. Let him cry it out some more.
You get the picture. (It’s terrible to hear them crying so long)

At 10:54 pm, he stopped crying. It’s now 7:30 am and he’s not up yet. And he didn’t wake up once during the night.

If this is going to be a 4 hour get down to sleep ritual for a while, I’m going to need to start at 4:30 pm.

Christmas Pictures

We thought we were going to get a priceless picture today.

It is priceless.

And this picture says it all too. A booger-y unhappy boy.

The last post about us being so hardcore about the sleep thing. Yes, it was a big steaming pile of crap.
He was sick Thursday and Friday. We’ve had him in bed with us every night since Thursday night.
I took a 1/2 day on Friday to hang with him – thankfully since the commute home would have taken me over 2 hours with the weather blitz we had (which snow is already gone). We tried to put him down in his crib again tonight. He cried for well over an hour before we cracked.

Today, the fever was better and the sneezing and boogers weren’t too horrible, so we went to a kids’ Christmas party with my mom at her club. It was adorable in an organized chaos kind of way.

Andrew’s cousin E. wanted a picture with him and Santa today.
