I’m not sure why, but I took a picture of my office at 7:30 am on Thursday morning. This is what it looks like when I start my day.

Not really the picture of professionalism and organization, is it?
My degrees and shit are on the wall to the left. I still need to frame my B&W poster of Yank.ee stadium and my New York bar certificate and hang them somewhere. There is absolutely nothing on the wall opposite my desk and it’s bugging me to keep looking up at an empty wall.
Plus, I really think I need a plant. A fake one would be best for me. I’m thinking I need to redecorate – it would definitely help my feng shui.
I’m working on trying to be more organized, I’ve just been too busy lately.
Halfway through the day yesterday, I couldn’t find my ringing desk phone. It was under too many property maps. Sigh.
I also feel a little overwhelmed about the level of work, not just the amount. In the past week, I have had to do matrix reviews on transmission easements comparing my notes to the engineers on the project, I’ve had to draft a “make nice but screw you” letter to a broker in France on a contaminated property deal, drafted (with some help from my contract goddess buddy here) almost from scratch a professional services contract for a municipality. By the end of the day today, I have to finish the entire matrix review for the engineers. And by Monday morning, I need to draft a commercial purchase and sale agreement that has specific environmental land use restriction language (totally flying blind on this one).
There was a moment yesterday when I wondered why they trusted me with all this shit. And what is going to happen when they all realize that I’m not really a lawyer, I just play one on tv. I still think I’m 18 yrs old and not grown up to have so much responsibility. Doesn’t anyone realize that??
This weekend is looking like there will be few minutes of down time (i.e. at home doing nothing time).
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. Maybe I can do some contract work by the pool on Sunday….

What a great idea to post a picture of your daily home. We should all take a page out of your book and post pics of our office/day job spaces.
You know you sound so smart to us non law folk. Funny thing is I feel the same way you do sometimes. When are they going to find out I really don’t know what I’m talking about. Maybe we don’t give ourselves enough credit and we’re actually good at what we do?
Have a great weekend!

Ok your work is way intimidating – I agree with Dee we should totally have a “take a picture of your office” post.
I hope you do get a little bit of down time – by the pool – but maybe leave the work back at home and just relax cause you deserve it!

I hope you can some how decorate to find peace and balance in your office space. You spend enough time there that I think it’s worth the little bit of effort in buying a fake ficus tree and setting it up across from your desk.
Do some work by the pool. are you friggin kidding me. The only thing you could have said that was worse would have been to add….while sipping on a frosted margarita and eating chips and homemade quacamole. Come on now.
Hope you have a relaxing weekend.

I think you need Patriot ’s stuff instead of the dreaded Y stuff. It could be cursed you know lol. You are definitely a lawyer…my relatives who are have very similiar offices.

Your office looks very organized to me! When I first read your comments without the picture (my slow connection) I expected something that didn’t look professional, but it looks good to me. You can definitely tell that you do a lot of work, which is the goal of a workspace, no? I used to always feel like a fake until I realized that most people feel like that. Better to feel like a fake than to be sure that you are right about everything without anything to back it up.

HeyKer – I definitely need some Pats stuff. I agree. But I have to keep some yankee stuff in here – I’m in Red.Sox territory and I need something to jab at my Boston fan co-workers.

I would absolutely freak if I had that much to do on my desk along with stuff to do on my floor.

If there is ever a paper shortage we’ll know where to find some! You need a mural. You’ve definitely got the wall space.

i know exactly how you feel in that department. i realized yesterday that i have been on my own at work, off orientation, for 2 months. i feel often that i am just trying to keep everyone breathing until the next nurse comes in next shift! like my nurse manager will show up and say thanks but we’ll take it from here… sooo much responsibility.

Wowza! At work – taking a picture even – at 7:30. Way too early for me!
I agree with others… I don’t think you give yourself enough credit. I too have this “fear” that they’ll someday realize how useless I really am… and that I’ve got them all fooled. But I don’t have the *amount* of work you do, for sure.
