maternity clothes

I’ve decided that I have a love/hate relationship with maternity clothes.

I love how comfy some of the clothes are, but am very picky about the styles.

I’ve found a few cute pairs of pants. 3 pairs total – 1 at a maternity store, 1 pair at Target and 1 pair at Gap (the pair I found at Target – Liz Lange – maybe my favorite pair of pants ever)

But the shirts are not my thing so far. They are all either way too girly, show too much cleavage or skin everywhere else, or are too poofy in the belly area and I don’t need that for another 2-3 months or so.

Plus, I’ve discovered that maternity clothes are made for one particular type of pregnant woman. They are made for that 5’3” cute little skinny-minny pregnant woman with no fat anywhere other than a cute little butterball belly.

I am not that cute little adorable pregnant woman.

I don’t have a cute little ass. In fact, my ass and thighs are growing at an exponential rate. I have a new double chin. I don’t want to wear things that accentuate the fact that my boobs are becoming gi-normous and I do not like clothes that cling to every part of my body to show off the wonderful pregnant belly. Those clingy shirts will just draw more attention to the fact that fat is growing in every other place but my belly.

I’ve resorted to several tunic-style shirts and am abstaining from wearing business suits from now until January/February. If I need to attend a client meeting or town meeting, they are just going to get what they get.

I think my belly grew over the weekend. Surprisingly, I lost weight between my 14 week visit and my 18 week visit. I’m not sure how that happened, it’s not due to my dramatic change in diet for the better. I doubt that vanilla milkshakes and corn muffins have contributed to my weight loss.

To appease my blog friends…here it goes again.

A pregnant Holly at 18.5 weeks.

In other news, the acid reflux is just continuing to get worse. I asked the nurse on Friday what I was doing wrong. I can’t figure out what foods make it worse or what helps (vanilla milkshakes usually help!). She told me that it’s not the food I’m eating. I have no control over it, it’s the baby.

I thought I had discovered that it’s worse the longer I wait between eating, but I was proved wrong last night.

On Thursday night, I did something slightly stupid. It got so bad, I followed a friend’s advice for a remedy. It involved drinking some apple cider vinegar and water. I googled the remedy and found that I could put honey in the mixture to make the taste better. Needless to say, it just made me puke. And I puked so badly, that I scratched up my throat and ended up spitting up blood for about 30 minutes (yes, that was rather alarming, but I could feel where it was coming from so I didn’t panic. Lo panicked a little.)

For now, I’m just trying to stick to some benign foods and my Rolaids. I’ve been starting to sleep slightly upright, but between not being able to lie on my side and trying to be elevated for the reflux, I’m not sleeping well.

I keep thinking to myself, wow – this is going to be a long 5 more months! And if one more person tells me how wonderful their pregnancy was, I might kick them. (Or if my 5’2” size 4 mother tells me one more time how I can do Weight.Watchers while pregnant, I might just kick her too!)

We are hopefully heading up to the shore to my parents’ house on Thursday night with the kayaks on the car!

Hope everyone has a wonderful July 4th weekend!

When I was pregnant the first time I had bad heart burn and the midwife said I could take Tums. Oh dear Lord I ate them like candy. The second time around I had extremely horrible heartburn/reflux from vey early on. I had a different midwife and she told me I could safely take Ranitidine. It was a miracle!!!! I took it twice a day and it helps so, so, so much I almost cried with relief.

I’m so sorry you are miserable. :(

I’m with you on the maternity clothes. I had a hard time finding shirts I liked. Check online and see if you can find things you like. Good luck – and I think you are very cute and pregnant. :)

You look very cute, Holly. You look pregnant, not fat – that’s for sure.
I never wore “maternity” clothes. I was just lucky enough to find regular tunics and elastic waist pants that worked for me. Do you wear dresses? I loved wearing dresses when I was pregnant, although I NEVER wear them otherwise. They were just comfy, and I felt they hid my fat ass. I had the hardest time with underwear….in fact they were the first thing I took OFF when I got home from work. My pregnant body wanted to go “commando” that’s for sure.
Have you tried baking soda for the acid reflux? A teaspoon mixed in a small amount of water really does the trick. I hope you can get some relief for that soon. It’s a miserable thing to have. Pregnant or not.

Have a wonderful weekend! Happy 4th!

Holly… get yourself some Zantac (Ranitidine)!!! It works like a charm and according to our doctors, it is safe to take. Don’t allow yourself to be miserable any longer.

    Have a great holiday weekend!

Your doctor can prescribe you something for the reflux. It’s safe.

Try old navy maternity. they at least have more “normal” stuff.
Granted, everything is for a size 6, but sometimes you get lucky.

    Good luck.

Dude I had the worst acid reflux ever while pregnant! It once landed me in the ER it was so bad and I thought I was dying. I had to take tums every night before bed to help ease it.
I hate maternity clothes!! Too girly for me. I just wore pj pants and t shirts!! You look great!!

Sophisticated, not girly clothes can be found now days for every pregnant lady from petite to plus size and for every occasion imaginable. There are maternity swimsuits, pants and tops that I can’t do without at http://www.newmommyteesandjeans.com. Part of the fun of pregnancy is getting new clothes.

You’re right about the maternity clothes, they are way too girly. Kim did score some plain maternity T-shirts at Motherhood Maternity though (if you’re looking for casual clothes) so you might want to try your luck there if you have one nearby. She also got nice capris and pants there that she can wear to work.

Kim also has bad heartburn but hers is manageable with Tums. So sorry the home remedy made you sick. Kim said she heard almonds help, but she doesn’t believe it. Something to try though. Good luck!

You look great, by the way.

I haven’t read your blog in a while, so I totally missed that you were pregnant. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

We’re also expecting again — twin boys! 18 weeks along, same as you!

i hear ya on the heartburn front. sorry. with my last pregnancy, it was so bad, i would have to brace myself once i felt it coming on. sooooooooo bad. gaviscon worked, and had to have some handy at all times. hate to say this but it doesn’t get better as the baby grows… i’m sure you will find something that helps…

and don’t be too hard on yourself. we are always our worse critics. you look fine.

reflux is no fun. the only thing that worked for me was drinking a glass of milk. often at 2am i could be found in the kitchen pouring a giant glass of milk. and then of course, I’d be up in a few hours because i’d had such a large glass, but the reflux would have subsided!

I think I’m going to have to take a trip to Target now to check out their maternity clothes. I’m also finding that most of the shirts I have are showing off a little bit too much for my liking.

Acid reflux is the worst. I’ve suffered from it for years without being pregnant Now… ugh. It sucks even more. Tums are my best friend!
